Coiling

A hand-building method in which snake-like bits of clay are spiraled together to produce a cylindrical shape. After that, the coils are flattened out to give the object a consistent form. The coils are only exposed on rare occasions. Coiled pieces do not lend themselves well to functional components since coiling is a laborious process and coiled items have an increased likelihood of weak spots at any of the connections between the coils.
